Apps to Help You Move House

A move involves more lists, dates and small tasks than most people can comfortably keep in their head. A few general-purpose apps, used well, cover most of what you need — you don't need anything specialised.

For keeping track of tasks and dates

A simple to-do or notes app (Trello, Notion, or even the Reminders/Notes app that's already on your phone) is enough to run a moving-day checklist, with due dates set against the weeks leading up to completion. The important thing isn't the app — it's having one single list, rather than sticky notes in three different places.

For cataloguing what you own

If you're packing a lot of boxes, an inventory app such as Sortly lets you photograph and label box contents as you pack, so you can search "where are the kitchen knives" on your phone instead of opening boxes on moving-in day. Even a simple numbered-box system with a notes-app list achieves much the same thing without a dedicated app.

For the admin side

For the new area

Google Maps is worth spending ten minutes with before moving day — saving the route to the nearest supermarket, GP surgery and pharmacy means one less thing to figure out in the first exhausting week. Zoopla and Rightmove's area guides are also useful if you want a steer on schools, transport links and local amenities before you've properly explored on foot.

None of this is complicated. The apps aren't doing the work — they're just making sure the ordinary admin of a move happens on a list somewhere, instead of being carried around in your head on top of everything else.
